A critical analysis of tithe and seed sowing on contemporary Christianity in Nigeria.Gladys N. Akabike, Peace N. Ngwoke & Onyekachi G. Chukwuma - 2021 - HTS Theological Studies 77 (1):8.
The issues of tithes and seed sowing have taken a central focus in contemporary Christianity in Nigeria among the preachers. Many a time, it is assumed that tithes and seed sowing are requirements for salvation, prosperity and total well-being of the members. Making many to believe that Christianity is a money-venture business one can succeed if he knows how to hoodwink the gullible. Many have been deceived that by parting with a substantial amount of money in the name of sowing (...)

Emerging from the Tomb.Vance G. Morgan - unknown
As part of his Easter Sunday homily last year, my friend Mitch—the rector of the Episcopal church I attend—told the story of Gladys, a lifelong pillar of her Congregational church, one of only three churches within a seventy-mile radius in her area of the rural Midwest; the other two were Lutheran and Roman Catholic. One fateful Easter morning, Gladys arrived with her three children in tow, ready for Easter festivities. The homily was given by a young man who, (...)

Culture in Embodied Cognition: Metaphorical/Metonymic Conceptualizations of FEAR in Akan and English.Gladys Nyarko Ansah - 2014 - Metaphor and Symbol 29 (1):44-58.
This article examines the role of culture in the metaphorical/metonymic conceptualizations of fear, a primary emotion, in two languages—Akan (a West African, Kwa language) and English. The article adopts the general framework of conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) to compare and contrast the differences and/or similarities in the conceptualizations as well as the language-specific construals or elaborations of shared conceptual metaphors of fear in the two languages. The analysis of the language-specific realizations of the shared metaphorical/metonymic conceptualizations of the emotion concept (...)

Valuing Lives and Allocating Resources: A Defense of the Modified Youngest First Principle of Scarce Resource Distribution.Ruth Tallman - 2012 - Bioethics 28 (5):207-213.
In this paper, I argue that the ‘modified youngest first’ principle provides a morally appropriate criterion for making decisions regarding the distribution of scarce medical resources, and that it is morally preferable to the simple ‘youngest first’ principle. Based on the complete lives system's goal of maximizing complete lives rather than individual life episodes, I argue that essential to the value we see in complete lives is the first person value attributed by the experiencer of that life. For a life (...)

Ethical concerns in maternal and child healthcare in Malawi.Gladys Msiska, Tiwonge Munkhondya, Berlington Munkhondya, Lucy Ngoma, Hlalapi Kunkeyani, Andrew Simwaka, Pam Smith, Lucy Kululanga, Rodwell Gundo, Ezereth Kabuluzi, Patrick Mapulanga & Chisomo Mulenga - 2022 - Clinical Ethics 17 (3):256-264.
Background Caring is a core function of nurses and it confers upon them ethical obligations as ethical agents. Failure to carry out such ethical obligations raises ethical concerns. This study was not intended to explore ethical concerns, but the reported findings reveal problems which have ethical implications. This paper aims to elucidate the ethical issues inherent in the findings and propose strategies to mitigate them. Research design and methods An exploratory-descriptive qualitative design was used within a larger Action Research Study. (...)

Emotive responses to ethical challenges in caring.Gladys Msiska, Pam Smith & Tonks Fawcett - 2014 - Nursing Ethics 21 (1):97-107.
This article reports findings of a hermeneutic phenomenological study that explored the clinical learning experience for Malawian undergraduate student nurses. The study revealed issues that touch on both nursing education and practice, but the article mainly reports the practice issues. The findings reveal the emotions that healthcare workers in Malawi encounter as a consequence of practising in resource-poor settings. Furthermore, there is severe nursing shortage in most clinical settings in Malawi, and this adversely affects the performance of nurses because of (...)

Promoting racial equity in COVID-19 resource allocation.Lori Bruce & Ruth Tallman - 2021 - Journal of Medical Ethics 47 (4):208-212.
Due to COVID-19’s strain on health systems across the globe, triage protocols determine how to allocate scarce medical resources with the worthy goal of maximising the number of lives saved. However, due to racial biases and long-standing health inequities, the common method of ranking patients based on impersonal numeric representations of their morbidity is associated with disproportionately pronounced racial disparities. In response, policymakers have issued statements of solidarity. However, translating support into responsive COVID-19 policy is rife with complexity. Triage does (...)

The article is the result of the research project “Higher Education in Humanistic Perspective: An Approach from Martha Nussbaum”, having Nussbaum’s book Cultivating Humanity: A Classical Defense of Reform in Liberal Education as the main referent for the considerations presented. Hermeneutics is used as the philosophical method. One of the purposes of the article is to reveal how higher education courses in human development might be transformed from the perspective of self-examination in Martha Nussbaum’s thought, understanding the latter as one (...)

Is a Uniform Approach to Whistle-Blowing Regulation Effective? Evidence from the United States and Germany.Gladys Lee, Esther Pittroff & Michael J. Turner - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 163 (3):553-576.
The purpose of this study is to examine whether United States -style regulatory intervention to encourage whistle-blowing can be immediately effective if transplanted into another country with a distinctly different historical cultural background and institutional system. A total of 98 U.S. and 84 German accountants participated in a laboratory experiment relating to a case of financial statement fraud. The provision of anti-retaliation protection and monetary rewards for whistle-blowing were manipulated and participants were asked to assume the role of an internal (...)

Voluntary Engagement in Environmental Projects: Evidence from Environmental Violators.Gladys Lee & Xinning Xiao - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 164 (2):325-348.
An important question in the business ethics literature concerns organizational response in the aftermath of an unethical business practice. This study examines factors affecting firms’ decision to take reparative action in the aftermath of an environmental violation. Specifically, we investigate environmental violators’ decision to undertake a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP), which is an initiative that promotes restorative justice. To settle an environmental violation, the United States’ environmental regulator allows offenders the option of either paying the full penalty or a reduced (...)

Madness and Democracy: The Modern Psychiatric Universe: The Modern Psychiatric Universe.Gladys Swain & Marcel Gauchet - 2012 - Princeton University Press.
How the insane asylum became a laboratory of democracy is revealed in this provocative look at the treatment of the mentally ill in nineteenth-century France. Political thinkers reasoned that if government was to rest in the hands of individuals, then measures should be taken to understand the deepest reaches of the self, including the state of madness. Marcel Gauchet and Gladys Swain maintain that the asylum originally embodied the revolutionary hope of curing all the insane by saving the glimmer (...)

Many important arguments regarding theistic belief are discussed in some form. The article is intended for use in an introduction to philosophy, or an introductory philosophy of religion course, as a humorous way to foster discussion and expose students to criticisms of theistic (...)

The flip side of radical autonomism is known as radical moralism. Splitting the difference between radical autonomism and radical moralism is the view known as moderate moralism, endorsed by contemporary aesthetician Noël Carrol. Radical moralism traces its roots back to Plato, who was all too aware of art's power to sway the hearts of its audience. The joke slightly depowers the powerful person, by transferring that power to the audience who laughs. John Belushi's Samurai Futaba sketches are more cringy than (...)

Participation in sports such as football puts youth athletes at high risk of injury. helmets cannot protect players from the possibility of traumatic brain injury, and repeated concussive injuries can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy later in life. in light of such facts, the morally appropriate role of physicians who treat patient-athletes comes into question. i argue that pediatricians ought to be committed to a high level of shared decision making, whereby their goal, rather than being to provide the medically (...)

This paper attempts to determine the best way to understand-and, thus, treat—patients who claim to hold certain health—related values and goals yet consistently act in ways that undermine and work against those values and goals. Since at least the 1970s, this phenomenon has been known in the medical community as patient noncompliance. This can come in the form of failure to take medication as prescribed, as well as failure to adhere to any number of doctors' orders, including recommendations to modify (...)
